Some of My Favorite Places:
Listed next to a few of the counties is a description of one of my favorite places to bird there. I hope you find them helpful.
Wow! Fort De Soto during spring migration can be a birder's dream come true. In fact, I can't think of a bad time to visit Fort De Soto.
As my students might say, "OMG! Circle B Bar Ranch is totally awesome." Really, it is. If you haven't been there yet, go now.
Another place worth a stop at the right time of year is Banana Lake Park located west of US 98 and South of SR 570 near Lakeland Highlands. Scan the lake for terns, gulls and pelicans, and be sure to scan the boat house roofs as well.
Caravelle Ranch is a great birding spot most of the year, but it's fantastic in winter. Our group had Henslow's, Grasshopper, Field, Savannah, Song, Swamp, White-throated, Chipping, Vesper, and (possibly) Lincoln Sparrows in one day. Add a towhee, and that's an 11-sparrow day.
When I'm in Seminole County I always try to stop at White's Landing at the end of Spring Ave on the southern shore of Lake Jesup. It's a very tiny park - no more than an acre or two - but it's a great spot for scoping the lake in a peaceful setting.
My favorite stop in Taylor County is Hagan's Cove. The water is typically calm and shallow making it perfect for a variety of waders and shorebirds regardless of the tide. Also, it's fairly easy to get Towhees, nuthatches and the usual pine woods birds along the road into the Cove.
Chastain-Seay Park in Worthington Springs along the Santa Fe River is a little gem. Easily birded in one day, it still has a variety of habitats that support a rich variety of birds. Be sure to check along the river for waterthrushes and the trees along the old boardwalk for a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Northern Flickers are also common here. I found most of my Union County warblers here. It's worth the trip off the beaten path.
I had the birding experience of a lifetime in May, 2010. Michael Brothers led a pelagic birding trip about 100 miles east of New Smyrna. We set a state record for Arctic Terns - 64 - and had numerous Black-capped Petrels, all three Storm Petrels, Parasitic and Pomarine Jaegers, Cory's and Audubon Shearwaters, what seemed to be hundreds of Sooty Terns, and 3 White-tailed Tropicbirds. Some day you just have to try one of Michael's trips.
